Wicked King Casmir cannot control Madouc, the wild and willful changeling secretly switched at birth with Prince Dhrun, rightful heir to the throne. So Casmir ordains a quest whosoever brings him the Holy Grail will have Madouc for his bride. But the fairy-born princess chooses to decide her own fate, and sets out with a stable boy to find the Grail herself. Meanwhile, a spiteful wizard seeks to undo the spell that prevents the war-torn Elder Isles from sinking into the sea. The third volume in Grandmaster Jack Vance's Lyonesse trilogy brings the epic tale of the Elder Isles to its magnificent and melancholy conclusion. Madouc Lyonesse Volume 3 Jack Vance 9781619470934 Books
What can I say? From the beginning John Holbrook Vance conquered my heart and mind. I'v been reading through his production for almost 40 years, buying his books both in hard copy and lately in electronic format, over and over. This is at least the fifth time I read the Lyonesse Trilogy and each time I discover some little item to reconsider in the light of the changes that age brought about on my character. After Madouc I started the Green Pear and I was surprise to realize that in every book the arrangements in place for Shimrod's Trilda cottage/mansion change slightly. I would have been diminished if Jack Vance works did not enter my life. I highly recommend to each one of the prospective readers to let themselves get involved in the fantastic worlds portayed by the Master Writer.Product details

Madouc Lyonesse Volume 3 Jack Vance 9781619470934 Books Reviews
Lyonesse is a spectacular trilogy and this third and final book is a wonderful, lengthy and strong conclusion. As the title says, it focuses on the young fairy halfing Madouc and her "coming of age" and the role she plays in the events surrounding King Casmir, King Aillas, Shimrod and the rest. Humourous moments throughout the book, although perhaps not as frequent as the first book. Madouc is a strong character, intelligent, resourceful, strong-willed, clearly one of the protagonists.
Vance's Lynoness series is very quirky and I'm a big fan of quirky and especially love Douglas Adams, Neil Gaiman & Piers Anthony. But Jack Vance seems to have preceded most of these guys and while he's written a ton of other stuff perhaps not as off the wall, his influence on other writers from Ursula K. LeGuin to George R.R. Martin could very likely extend to the likes of Anthony or others. Of course, in my experience the majority of humorous fantasy and sci-fi writers are British who see to have odd and whacky literary sensiblities imbedded in their DNA.
Jack Vance is one of the best. His books are real page turners and have inspired the imaginations of generations of readers. It's no fluke that Vance has inspired much of the content found in the world's most popular role playing game system.
I cannot recommend Vance highly enough. If you have a kid, give her or him a book by Jack Vance.
Jack Vance could really write. There just isn't anyone quite like him putting out stories today. Madouc is a young princess of faerie heritage who can't help getting into a lot of mischief, despite the cruel punishments that her foster parents (the king and queen) inflict on her for it. If they catch her, that is. Anyway, in the story there's a war, and there's a good-guy hero who eventually meets up with Madouc. And in the end her nasty old foster parents get what's coming to them.
The Russians say, In taste and color, one has no brother. Jack Vance is the man. This trilogy (Madouc is the third) is amazing. Vance is a master. Lyonesse unequaled story telling based on Arthurian and Celtic legends. I teach Russian literature and I re-read Vance's work for joy.
The Lyonesse trilogy is the best fantasy I've ever read, though I am admittedly not all that well versed. Lord of the Rings may be more impressively imaginative and detailed, but Vance is a better read IMHO, with a luminous imagined world that you can almost believe.
Jack Vance's Lyonesse trilogy is one of the great works of fantasy. The characters are complex, the plots are involved, and the writing is absolutely unique. No one else in the genre has such a command of the language. And Vance is very funny as well. Yes, it is true it takes a while to sink into the atmosphere of Lyonesse, to appreciate King Casmir's evil, Madouc's intelligence and spirit, and the atmosphere of the court. But the reward is a reading experience that you will never forget. On the other hand, a lot of people these days don't really read for content. So if your idea of a good fantasy novel is a long series of never-ending, incredibly serious 700-page tomes in which some high schooler fights a procession of genre-ic villains to avert some Great Evil and never quite seems to resolve anything, then you should probably stick to Robert Jordan and his numerous clones. But if you want to read someone who is a master wordsmith and who writes for educated adults, then Vance is a must read. My only complaint is that doesn't have Vance's other great works--Planet of Adventure, the Demon Princes, Alastor, the Cadwal Chronicles, and so on.
